At the crossroads
Midway between the cities of Quebec and Montreal, these two widely contrasting regions lie on opposite shores of the St. Lawrence River. Two of Quebec’s Abenaki communities have settled the fertile lands of the Bois-Francs. To the north, in the lands of the Upper Saint-Maurice region, two of the three Quebec Atikamekw communities perpetuate their nomadic traditions in the heart of the great boreal forests. In these ancient lands, the memory of a people comes alive along the majestic Saint-Maurice River, formerly named by the Amerindians’ Métabéroutin, signifying “whirlwinds”.
