Abenaki – Wabanaki, the People of the Rising Sun
Upon the arrival of Europeans, vast forest areas were already being shared between the Abenaki on the present territories of southern Quebec, the States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and part of New Brunswick. The name “Abenaki” is derived from the terms w8ban (dawn) and Aki (land) and means “people of the dawn”. The Abenaki are known for their basketwork made from ash and sweetgrass, their traditional dances, their sun masks made of corn leaves and their totems.
There are two Abenaki communities: Odanak and Wôlinak.
