Atikamekw – the People of the Bark

Once called “Round Heads”, because of the shape of their headdress, the Atikamekw have been known by their original name, which means “whitefish”, since 1970. They are famous for their expert birch bark work, from which they build canoes and make other practical household objects. Today, the nation concentrates its efforts on economic development while maintaining respect for traditions and the environment.

There are three atikamekw’s communities : Manawan, Obedjiwan and Wemotaci.
